AC induction motors create torque to drive mechanical applications. They consist of a stator and rotor. The stator receives an alternating current and produces a rotating magnetic field. The magnetic field transmits an electric current to the motor’s rotor, which drives applications. Most AC induction motors are fixed-speed motors, but some can be used with variable frequency drives to adjust motor speeds. AC induction motors also come in single-phase and three-phase forms. Three-phase motors are larger and more rugged. They are most commonly used in industrial drives, while single-phase motors are found in household appliances.
