How to Choose an Electric Motor
Choosing the right motor for the right application can be tough - that's why we're here to help.
The first step in choosing an electric motor is to determine its application. Will it be used for a conveyor belt, or in a textile mill? Will it be in a clean, granule free environment, or will it be subject to a lot of dust and grime? The answers to these questions will determine the type of motor you choose.
For example, a total enclosed fan cooled motor is ideal for outdoor applications in which dust or granule contamination is a risk. For dry, indoor applications an open drip proof motor would be a better selection.
Other considerations include RPM and torque. Depending on your motor’s application and the loads it will be under, you must select a motor with appropriate power output. Torque and RPM are what determines a motor’s power. A motor’s power is equal to the torque times the RPM divided by 5252.
Finally, one must consider voltage. Plants generally come outfitted to supply either 230 or 460 voltage. Between the two, there is little practical difference. However, 460 volt is often more efficient. And it’s important to remember that operating a motor at the outer limits of its voltage requirements reduces its efficiently and causes premature failure. It’s therefore important to subject motors to a voltage within its nameplate rating.
