Countersinks create cone-shaped holes in a workpiece that accommodate the heads of screws or rivets. These cone-shaped holes allow fasteners to sit flush with or below the surface of a workpiece. They come in a variety of fluted designs and materials and are used in metal, wood, and plastic.

Solid-pilot counterbores are used to enlarge an existing hole or to create a seat for a fastener so that it lies flush with the workpiece. The pilot tip cannot be changed out or replaced and is permanently attached to the tool.
