Center drills, also known as combination drill and countersinks, are short, thick bits used to start a hole prior to drilling. They have pilot tips that create an indentation or small-diameter hole in the workpiece to prepare it for drilling. This helps the twist bit to avoid walking and wandering off-center while drilling.

Countersinks create cone-shaped holes in a workpiece that accommodate the heads of screws or rivets. These cone-shaped holes allow fasteners to sit flush with or below the surface of a workpiece. They come in a variety of fluted designs and materials and are used in metal, wood, and plastic.

Spotting drills are short, rigid bits used to drill starter holes into a workpiece prior to drilling with a twist bit. Their narrow cutting edge and small web ensure accurate starts of holes. Spotting drills prevent the twist bit from wandering off center while drilling.
