Helical gears transmit torque. They have angled teeth that gradually engage the angled teeth of another gear or a gear rack, which results in smooth motion and quiet, efficient operation. Helical gears are used in high-speed, heavy-load applications and can be mounted on parallel or perpendicular shafts. Perpendicular mounting requires the gear helixes to run at similar angles, while parallel mounting requires the gear helixes to run at opposite angles and connect at a single point. This single point gradually expands during rotation, which allows helical gears mounted on parallel shafts to carry heavier loads.
